Private or house brand products are visible everywhere, both in supermarkets and in pharmacies and they are better priced than major brands. But does this mean that they are of poorer quality?
There’s no reason to believe so, since pharmacists and chefs prefer them for their personal use.
According to a new study conducted by the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, when chefs buy provisions in a non-professional capacity, non-branded products account for 80% of their purchases as against 61% for the average consumer. As for pharmacists visiting a pharmacy for a simple headache, the study revealed that their choice veers towards generic drugs 90% of the time.
The conclusion of the authors of this study: If everyone in the US emulated the shopping habits of these well informed professionals, the spending on basic branded products would decrease by 24%, which would save $20 million annually on basic products.
So how about you, do you buy private brands?
