World Salt Awareness Week

March 23, 2011 , ,

World Salt Awareness WeekThe average Canadian eats 3 times more salt (1) than what is recommended, and 50% more than the tolerable upper intake level. As a result, nearly 5 million (2) of us suffer from hypertension, which is a major risk factor for stroke.

From March 21st to 27th, all those involved with the prevention of cardiovascular disease unite to raise awareness about the importance of reducing salt intake. SOSCuisine joins in as follows:

  • The SOSCuisine "formula" focuses on fresh, unprocessed food, which is the most important step towards reducing sodium intake;
  • Our "Heart-Healthy" Meal Plans, specifically designed to reduce hypertension, and covering all the meals in the day, provide on average 1,500 mg of sodium, which corresponds to the adequate intake of the latest recommendations;
  • Our other meal plans for "health concerns" provide on average 1,700 mg of sodium per day, i.e. 13% more than the adequate intake, and comfortably below the tolerable upper level of 2,300 mg/day;
  • Our "lifestyle" and "allergy" meal plans provide on average 670 mg of sodium for the evening meal, leaving 55% of the adequate intake for the other meals of the day.

Strong evidence links current high salt intake to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the main cause of stroke and a major cause of heart attack, two of the most common causes of death and illness in the world. It is also widely recognized that a high salt diet has other adverse effects, such as osteoporosis, stomach cancer, asthma and obesity.
