Hair and Nails: Mirrors of Your Health

Magic Flakes…

Wheat germ has a high concentration of nutrients essential for our hair and nails. Found at the heart of wheat, it’s obtained by removing the external layers (the bran and the endosperm). It contains nearly all the elements essential for your hair and nails’ development and health: up to 30% protein, methionine, Vitamins E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, as well as minerals and trace elements (zinc, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, phosphorus). There are two types of wheat germ: stabilized and un-stabilized. The first has been heated, and antioxidants have been added to prevent the deterioration of the lipids it contains and to increase its shelf life. The second hasn’t been submitted to any modification: it offers a better nutritional quality (up to twice as much Vitamin E) but has to be stored in an airtight container, in a cool place, and consumed quickly.

Hair Problems

A true reflection of the state of our health, our hair can inform us of potential nutritional deficiencies. A Vitamin B6 deficiency can become apparent through greasy hair, testifying also to a disequilibrium in the production of sebum. Sprinkle a tablespoon of wheat germ flakes on your salads, yogurts, compotes or soups. On the other hand, dry and brittle hair is often testifying to an iron deficiency: it’s time to liven up your dishes with sesame seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds and parsley.

Fight Against Stress

Magnesium intervenes at several stages of hair and nail development: it protects cells and cysteine from oxidative stress, it helps cells metabolize glucose therefore ensuring that enough energy is present for hair and nail synthesis and growth, and it reduces the secretion of stress hormones. The latter is particularly damaging because studies have shown a link between hair loss and stress, probably related to an increased secretion of cortisol. Nails are not left out as stress promotes onychophagy, or nail biting. Make sure you have plenty of magnesium to protect yourself from stress and its harmful effects: almonds, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, dark chocolate can all be delicious and beneficial snacks if you’re a little hungry.

A very interesting natural supplement to take care of nails and hair is brewer’s yeast. Its high content of protein, methionine, B vitamins, sulfur, iron and other nutrients make it a great asset for hair and nail beauty. Its benefits don’t stop there, because it also looks after the intestinal flora and the skin. It’s therefore a good supplement, perfect as a course of treatment if you have an imbalanced and deficient diet. It is well tolerated by the body and can be consumed either as flakes to sprinkle on your dishes in the same way as wheat germ, or in pill form. You can easily find brewer’s yeast in health food shops.
