For a long time, I meant to write in this blog about the importance of “being mindful in the kitchen while we cook”. Cooking with our whole being engaged – mind, body, and emotions is something that I learned from my Mom. She used to call it “adding love to our food”. What does that mean? And why is it important?
It’s the easiest thing in the world to throw together a quick dinner while thinking a thousand different thoughts about everything except the produce in front of us. But really, it is almost as simple, and infinitely more gratifying, to close the mental door on the day, focus on the task at hand, and realize that this food – these ingredients – will nourish me and my family and will become the energy that sustains us.
Being mentally present changes what happens in the kitchen. It’s noticeable and it makes the food tasting wonderful.
That’s why I meant to write about this subject. Almost by chance, I found an inspiring video that can help me explain this concept. It’s called “How to Cut an Onion“, by Cynthia Lair, a nutrition and cooking teacher in Seattle, WA. Last fall she was invited to a local TEDx conference, where she gave a talk about what happens when we give our full attention to cooking.
I invite you to watch the video and share your thoughts.
First time I have ever replied, but must say I appreciate your blog very much and loved this You Tube message!!! Thank you!
I simply enjoyed the video with Cynthia Lair, How to cut an onion. It was a feel-good moment and I now understand how to cut the onion, too. Thank you very much.
Perfect – just what I needed to set the tone for my day as I get ready for work. Now I can’t wait to make dinner!
When I first saw this video it inspired me to blog as well: http://www.lesliedesigns.ca/mindful-cooking/
