Would you eat a “Frankenburger”?

August 9, 2013 , ,

The world’s first beef burger created from stem cells was unveiled in London on Monday. The 5-ounce (142 g) burger, which costs more than 250,000 euros ($343,000) to produce, was developed by Mark Post of Maastricht University with funding from Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

Post is among scientists who are experimenting with ways to grow meat in labs as an alternative to raising livestock. The two lucky volunteers that tasted the burger (an American food critic and an Austrian food scientist) said it had a cake-like quality and was close to meat, though lacking juiciness.

Post, whose work on cultured beef began in 2008, said the commercial production could begin in a decade or two.

Are you looking forward to it?
